Large Albumen Photo of C.S.A. surgeon general,
Large Albumen Photo of C.S.A. surgeon general,
measuring 10 x 12"of a dignified Major identified as “Col. William Maffitt Post, Surgeon Confederate Army -- Owned Chantilly a large Northern Virginia farm” on backboard. Likely a war date photo, though writing appears to be contemporary with several “September 31, 1956” stamped dates that coincide with most recent framing. We did not remove the portrait from the frame for closer inspection, but it appears to be an albumen photograph that has been professionally repainted in oils by an unknown colorist. A portrait of Colonel John Crowder Owens, 9th Virginia Infantry, executed in an identical format is known to date to 1861. William Moffitt Post is shown on the roster of Confederate Staff Departments as “Chief Surgeon.” While his rank would seem to indicate otherwise, no record of Post’s wartime activities could be located in the standard bibliographies, including the Official Records.
EXC condition, though should be rematted and framed.
