Spectacular Large 1868 Seymour & Blair Jugate Ferrotype. This mammoth 34mm type, nicknamed by collectors the "port hole" style, was produced for both tickets in 1868 and 1872. The ferro portraits are set into a hollow brass shell, with the presidential candidate's high-relief portrait on the reverse. A small loop at the top would allow it to be suspended for wearing, but we can't recall seeing an example so presented. Perhaps they were used more as pocket pieces, which would explain why such a high percentage of known examples have wear damage on the unprotected ferro images. Historically, the 1872 versions have carried the highest value, probably due to the fact that, in general, Greeley and 1872 Grant items are much scarcer and pricier than their 1868 counterparts. However, to our experience, while the 1868 Grant & Colfax is clearly the least scarce of the form, the Seymour & Blair is actually the rarest. This stunning, pristine example is surely unimprovable. Some deterioration of the original surface silvering is the only conceivable "negative," and even there, this example retains more of the silvering than any other we have seen. A very special ferro.
