Frederic Lanternier, the founder of the Lanternier porcelain works, began as an exporter of Limoges in the late 1850s. From 1885 to 1887, he was in a partnership located in Rue la Fonderie, France, which manufactured whiteware. In 1887, he was joined in the firm by his son, Alfred.
Alfred Lanternier had worked in England as a representative for Wedgwood prior to joining his father's firm. In 1890, the Lanterniers took over the old Ardant factory. Then in 1914, Alfred joined with his brother-in-law to form A. Lantenier & Cie. The company made utility tableware and decorative pieces; until the end of World War I they made only doll heads. In 1960, the company became part of the GDA works.
The marks on this piece indicate that it was made between 1891 and 1914.
The handpainting on this piece is far more detailed than it appears at first glance. In cleaning it, I noticed some water drops; only when I attempted to dry them did I discover that they are actually painted on - they are that realistic!
With lid, the pot stands approximately nine (9) inches tall. It is in impeccable undamaged condition.
