Lank Leonard - Mickey Finn Sunday Original Comic Strip Art, dated 12-13-38 (McNaught Syndicate, 1938). From one of the earliest years of the of the strip, this first-year Sunday comes complete with its matching Nippie topper. Nippie: He's Often Wrong was about a willful little boy who insisted on doing things his own way and was always wrong. His misdeeds were punished, and served as miniature morality plays, with the message to do what is right or pay the consequences. Mickey Finn was an Irish cop, and his name was a play on the slang term for a substance that has been surreptitiously added to a drink in order to stupefy, render unconscious, or otherwise incapacitate the person who drinks it. This lighthearted gag pokes fun at the nouveau riche who put on airs and are shocked by the well-meaning, but "low-brow" demeanor of their working class brethren. This Sunday measures an overall 16.75" x 22", and is in Very Good condition. There are horizontal cuts in the panel "gutters" between the Nippie topper and the "Mickey Finn" strip, and also between panel tiers two and three of the Mickey Finn strip, made by Leonard during production of the art. There is a minor bit of soiling along the edges of the paper, but these do little to diminish the incredible eye appeal and hilarity of this early example. Mickey Finn showed America a slice of Irish immigrant life in a humorous way, and proved so popular that the strip ran for almost forty years; this Sunday page will knock you out.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
