American writer (1902–1967) best known for such works as Weary Blues and The Ways of White Folks. TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, Hollow Hills Farm letterhead, May 22, 1941. Letter to a young admirer. In part, “Just before your letter came we had a very pleasant visit here at the farm from Dorothy Maynor who sang with great success this season on the coast…I hope you have had a chance to read my ‘The Big Sea’ by now and that you found it enjoyable. I am working on the second volume at present, a continuation which will carry the events of my life up to this year. It will not be published until late 1942 but I shall have a new book of poems ‘Shakespeare in Harlem,’ this coming fall.” Intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, scattered foxing to edges, and a pencil notation to top left, otherwise fine condition.
