Lakota Sioux War Shield w/ Buffalo Skull on Front
The lot features a hide covered wood war shield from Lakota Sioux artist John Young Buck having a Buffalo Skull on the front. The piece is comprised of a wood plaque covered completely in Indian tanned hide and tied on the back in the typical war shield drum fashion with Indian tanned hide as well. The front has two strips of old trade blanket clothe and the top edge is drapped in old trade blanket clothe which hangs down each side. Around the shield on the trade clothe drape are several hide fringes tied with wound glass blue padre and red white heart trade beads having rolled tin jingle cones and horsehair tail ends. The front of the shield also shows two large Turkey feathers wrapped in red trade clothe and tied with hide. The front of the shield has a screwed on large Great American Bison Buffalo bull skull with removable original horns. The skull presents wonderfully and is complete showing good condition with no breaks. The piece truly displays well and makes for a fantastic art piece. From Lakota Sioux artist John Young Buck from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation (born 1944) and was made in the late 1990's. Measures overall 42"L by 24"W by approximately 9" off the wall.
