The lot features a Lakota Sioux Native American Indian blunt dummy arrow from the 19th Century. The arrow was used by young men and children when playing and counting coup. The arrows would be shot, hitting the target with enough force to cause pain, but not enough to enflict major damage. The arrow shows a wide wood carved arrowhead that is part of the one piece arrow wood. The arrowhead end shows a round tapered pointed end. The arrow is painted with mineral pigment ocher stripes of blue and red and shows remnants of the fletching at the end. The arrow has an expertly carved nock. The piece shows overall good condition. Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection and collected by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector Bruce also was the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art Gallery in Bozeman which was both part museum and gallery. Measures 22.75"L with the end being approximately 1 inch in diameter.
