The first of eight passes for this rare Tahoe railroad. No. 265, issued for the year 1909 to M.F. Van Horn (Dist. Pass. Agent for Pennsylvania Lines) and Wife. These passes were good for transport on the company's railroad and steamers. The Lake Tahoe Railway & Transportation Company was the brainchild of Comstock lumber magnate D. L. Bliss. With the decline of the Comstock, Bliss saw the potential future of tourism at Lake Tahoe. He ripped up his Carson & Tahoe Lumber rails, purchased steamers, and incorporated the company in 1898. A 16 mile narrow gauge railroad was built from Truckee to the pier at Tahoe City. Passengers could get off the train and tour the lake in style. The railroad began operation in 1900, was leased by Southern Pacific in 1925, purchased by SP in 1933, and abandoned in 1943. Four Baldwin locomotives were used by the company. (Prag Collection)
