This was how businesses advertised, before radio and television: the broadside. This is a fine and rare example from 1878 that shows the cooperation between four separate businesses to lure tourist dollars to their prospective enterprises. Businesses represented on this ad are Benton`s Stage Line, Virginia & Truckee Railroad, the steamer "Niagara" and Lake Shore House in Tahoe City. The itinerary for the daily trip promises passengers will make connections in time to have lunch at their destination. One of the legs of the journey includes a trip by stagecoach. The coach was handled by the legendary Hank Monk, the driver mentioned by Mark Twain in "Roughing It." Monk was known mostly for taking newspaper editor and presidential hopeful Horace Greeley on a wild ride from Carson City to Placerville. An account of the ride was read on the floor of Congress, effectively squelching Greeley`s quest to be Commander in Chief. Block print style shows that the printer, Morning Appeal Print of Carson City, didn`t do perfect work. There are a few grammatical and spelling errors in the text. An historic document on its own, this piece contains names in California and Nevada history that will live forever. This is a fantastic document in fantastic condition. Also included is a framed bill head from the Ormsby House, dated 10 Sept. 1878. It appears to be an entry form for a racehorse named Golden Pest and it`s signed by J.W. French. - Jacobitz Collection -59875
