Lajos Markos RA 1917 – 1993 “Setting the Price” 24 x 30. Oil on Canvas. Signed lower right Born in Budapest, Hungary, Markos was trained at the Royal Academy there, ultimately becoming a member of the Royal Academy (RA). Portrait painting everyone from the Pope in the Vatican, to the Royal Family in England, famous muscians, etc et al and with commissions from several European Museums including the Bovington Armor Museum in England (he painted Field Marshal Montgomery and the winning British Tank Battle at El Alemein, Tunisa against Rommel’s vaunted Afrika Korps). He came to the United States following World War II with the Grumbacher Corporation and quickly established himself in New York City as a major portrait artist, with many of his subjects being celebrities such as John Wayne and Pablo Casals. In the 1960s, he moved to Houston, Texas, where he expanded his interest to western art. Examples of his work are in the Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City. He has also made a teaching video titled "Lajos Markos Classical Portrait Painting. Markos' paintings hang in museums in the United States and Europe. He has international recognition for both his portraits and his western art. Markos also painted portraits of the founders of the Zigler Museum, Fred B. & Ruth B. Zigler.
