Hungarian statesman (1802–1894) who played a leading role in bringing parliamentary government to that country. After abdicating his briefly held post as Regent-President in the turmoil that followed the ascension of Emperor Franz Joseph in 1848, the fugitive leader made a successful tour of Britain and the United States. Untranslated ALS in French, one page, 5.75 x 8.5, August 31, 1851. Kossuth writes to John P. Brown, a US diplomat in Constantinople. In very good condition, with chipped lower right corner, several intersecting folds, scattered soiling, mild shade toning, and show-through from remnants of a wax seal on the back. Accompanied by an 1852 $1 Certificate of Independent Hungarian Government, a circa 1857 advertisement for a Festival of American Liberty event with the proceeds benefiting the Kossuth Fund, and two portraits.
