Lafayette Autograph Letter Signed "Lafayette" in French, one page, 6.5" x 8". Paris, 13 Ventose an 9 [March 4, 1801]. Integral leaf addressed to Citizen Barante in Carcassonne. A letter of thanks, not translated, written on the day of President Thomas Jefferson's inauguration. Lafayette was a trusted friend of Thomas Jefferson who owned at least three portraits of him at Monticello. Included was Houdon's bust which was installed in the tea room in Jefferson's "gallery of worthies." When Lafayette visited America in 1824-1825, he spent almost two weeks at Monticello. In 1800, after French writer Claude-Ignace Brugiere de Barante (1755-1814) was persecuted in the reign of terror, he was appointed prefect of Carcassonne. In 1802, Napoleon Bonaparte named him prefect at Geneva and he served in his post until 1810. Barante's writings include works on geography, originally written for his children, that became very popular.
