Lafayette Autograph Document Signed, "Lafayette." This one page, handwritten letter measures 8" x 12.5", and is marked as a "copy". Lafayette signs the letter near the center of the page on the right edge. His wax seal accompanies it, and is still present. Lafayette was a confidant of George Washington, and was a valuable commodity for the colonists during the Revolutionary War. The letter was written to officially appoint James Madison Lafayette's legal attorney, giving him authority over his affairs in the United States while Lafayette was residing in Paris. It reads in part, "Know all men by these presents that J.M. P.Y.A.J. Gilbert Motier Lafayette, late Major General in the army of the United States of America now at Paris, have constituted, made, and appointed James Madison Esq. Secretary of State of the United States residing at Washington, my true and lawful Attorney…" A rare find, since two great names are mentioned in this letter, and it is signed by one of the true great figures of the American Revolution.

The letter is in very good condition; it has a major tear on the lower edge which extends up into the body of text; the paper has begun separating on the fold lines; slight fading of the iron-gall ink has begun, but the signature is still visible and legible.
