An elegant porte cigarette of
overall hammered design in the
Art Nouveau style, the slender gold box with
rounded corners is enhanced with a
cabochon sapphire thumbpiece. One corner
is applied with a Pan Slavic monogram
in three-toned
gold.
The interior is fitted on one side with a hinged
gold
openwork grill.<p>
Moscow, 1899-1908, fully hallmarked on both
sides, stamped Fabergé in Cyrillic,
56, the Russian gold standard for 14k
gold and Cyrillic initials I. L. for Ivan
Lebedkin, Moscow?s chief assaymaster.<p>

Moscow Workshop of Carl
Fabergé<p>
The Moscow workshop had its own highly
distinctive style. It excelled in Art Nouveau
items, which, like this example, mostly date
from around 1899. Perhaps the most famous
Fabergé cigarette case is from Moscow and of
Art Nouveau inspiration. Given to King Edward
VII by Mrs. George Keppel (now in the
collection of HM Queen Elizabeth), the striking
translucent royal blue enamel case is
enveloped by a sinuous diamond-set serpent.
Imperial patrons included Grand Duchess
Elizabeth Feodorovna, wife of Grand Duke
Serge, the Governor General of Moscow who
was assassinated by terrorists in 1905. After
this tragedy, the Grand Duchess joined a
convent and had all her family jewelry re-styled
by the Moscow workshop to give as presents
to her friends. ...
