This opulent miniature shrine dates back to the 19th century. The rectangular wooden body rises on a stepped base and is painted in black lacquer and richly decorated with gilding. The front shows an elaborate openwork decoration and panels carved in high relief depicting fine floral patterns with cherry blossoms and peonies as well as the ‘100 Antiquities’.

The double doors open to reveal a back wall painted in the finest manner depicting a lavish scene with ornate scroll patterns, scholar’s objects and shou characters. The doors feature reserves with delicate floral arrangements and an additional base. In China, shrines of this kind were often part of an altar and were used to lay down offerings for ancestor worship.

The shrine is in good condition consistent with age with some damage. The doors are loose and lacquer surface is partly missing at the base. The dimensions are 45 cm in height, 35.5 cm in width and 16 cm in depth.
