Group of 3 from the Prag collection, including: 1) Monitors in operation at La Grange Mine, the largest operating placer in the world - Gravel deposit over 600 feet in depth," postmarked 1911; 2) "La Grange Mine Weaverville, Cal.," postmarked 1919; 3) "Hydraulic Construction of State Hi-Way thru La Grange Mine. Weaverville, Calif. March, 1934."

Designated a historic mining district, the La Grange Mine began in the late 1860's as the mountains west of Weaverville in Trinity County became a hydraulic gold mining center. As the yield per cubic yard of material washed was so low, huge amounts of water was required to make a profit. In order to maintain water levels for hydraulic mining operations to continue, in 1873 a group of local miners formed the Weaverville Ditch and Hydraulic Mining Company (dot.ca.gov).
