This beautifully framed print by Guillaume Azoulay is an artist's proof of a work called "La Bete," which portrays a Native American on horseback charging toward a bison. There is so much movement and fluidity in this visually exquisite piece, and it was a top-selling piece by this artist in 1992.

Guillaume Azoulay was born in Casablanca, Morocco, in 1949. Azoulay’s parents settled in Paris when Azoulay was ten, and by age thirteen, he was planning his career as an artist and began sketching and selling his drawings on the street and at fairs. He has held major exhibits in Rome, Copenhagen, Monte Carlo, Reno, Paris, Tel Aviv, and many other cities. In 1978, two of his works were accepted into the permanent collection of the Louvre Museum in Paris. Their chief curator has said of Azoulay, "He is an artist whose varied works let us predict a very bright future." He has achieved international recognition as a successful and truly gifted artist. His unique self-taught style conveys strong illusions of fluid motion. His subjects appear to be caught in a vital moment of life. He does not use models, preferring to rely on his imagination.
As Azoulay met people from various parts of the world, his interest in traveling grew. When he was fourteen, he left home and hitchhiked across Europe and the Middle East. His desire to see and be part of the life, history, and beauty of the world took him from Copenhagen to Rome, from Lisbon to Jerusalem. Through his travels, he has become fluent in five languages. Azoulay made the world his university, and people were his main subject with their joys and pains and ways of life. Eventually, Azoulay settled in Israel in 1967 where he applied to the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem, the Middle East's most famous art academy. His application was rejected, but this did not deter Azoulay from continuing his studies. Azoulay studied drama and graduated as an actor. Unable to share his time between the theater and painting, Azoulay chose the visual arts. After moving several times, Azoulay settled in California in March of 1976, where he now lives with his family. Azoulay's wife is Charmaine Seal, a noted ballerina and another of Azoulay's favorite subjects in his artwork. They have two sons, Lawrence and Arnoud, and a daughter, Ondine, who is the subject of an etching that is part of the collection of the Bibliotheque National du Louvre in Paris. The brilliance of Azoulay's art centers on his ability to convey the purity of line to create strong illusions of fluid motion and life. Line is the key element of design in Azoulay's artwork. It is through his organic line that Azoulay creates balance, harmony, contrast, and the illusion of depth and movement in each one of his compositions. His works are found in the collections of former President Ronald Reagan, Francois Mitterand, the late Anwar Sadat, King Hassan II of Morocco, Prince Rainier, and Prince Karim Aga Khan. He is noted for his generosity and has made countless contributions of art to many worthwhile charitable organizations. He is extremely proud of his Jewish tradition and Sephardic heritage and has expressed his feeling of pride through many of his works of art.Guillaume Azoulay was presented with the Yehuda Halevi Award on February 12, 1986. One of his most notable accomplishments is the fact that Azoulay is the youngest artist to be accepted in the permanent archives of the Musée du Louvre, in Paris (description adapted from RoGallery.com).
