(1908-1973) Thirty-sixth President of the United States and creator of the "Great Society" social welfare programs. America's growing involvement in Vietnam led to his declining a renomination as president. Fine content T.L.S. "Lyndon" on his Senate letterhead as Democratic Leader, 1p. 4to., Washington, July 9, 1954 to Richard E. Berlin, the powerful president of the media mogul, the Hearst Corporation. In part: "...I am very glad that you approve of the stand I have taken...it has already borne results insofar as America's position against admission of Red China into the United Nations has been stiffened...Great Britain is modifying its previous position...". In his holograph postscript he adds: "Tell Horner & Allison (Mgr Editor in S[an] A[antonio] I could use a couple of strong editorials next week. It is 2 wks from election". Fine, matted with an engraving. Johnson - and Taiwan - saw to it that China remained out of the UN until 1971. 1954 saw mid-term elections, and Johnson crushed his competition with the help of the press which Johnson was so adept at controlling.
