LYNDON B. JOHNSON ORIGINAL TELEGRAM
LYNDON B. JOHNSON ORIGINAL TELEGRAM. Two-page Western Union Telegram. June 11, 1964. Sent to Governor Elbert N. Carvel (Governor of Delaware 1949-1953, 1961-1965) and reads "I appreciate receiving the statement of principle which you and a great majority of your fellow governors signed expressing support for the Civil Rights Legislation pending in the Congress. The strong bipartisan support of the Cloture Petition in the United States Senate demonstrates the national consensus favoring genuine progress in achieving equality of treatment and opportunity for all Americans. Passage of the bill will be a most significant step and the active, affirmative support of the legislation by Governors and local public officials—and by private organizations and individuals—can speed us toward the day when discrimination and bigotry are banished from our nation." Stamped at top "1964 Jun 11 PM 3:09". Written in pencil at top right "22-3-13" and written in red ink at right "Rec'd. 6/11/64/4 PM/J". Both pages are stapled at top left corner. 8" x 5.75".
