LYNDON B. JOHNSON ORIGINAL TELEGRAM. Western Union Telegram. November 26, 1963. Sent to Governor Elbert N. Carvel (Governor of Delaware 1949-1953, 1961-1965) days after President Kennedy was assassinated, extending appreciation in sending a message and visiting with him "during our hours of sorrow". Telegram is stamped "1963 Nov 26 PM 7 08". Red ink at top right reads "Rec'd. 10:10 a.m. 11/27/63/JM". 8" x 5.625". Telegram is stamped to an original copy of a two-page letter from Governor Carvel (unsigned) to President Johnson, December 2, 1963. The letter extends Governor Carvel's appreciation for President Johnson's invitation to join with other governors on November 25, 1963. The letter also expresses how President Johnson's leadership has inspired Delaware. Letter copy shows folding at all corners. "22-3-13" is written in pencil at top right corner of first page of letter.
