LYNDON B JOHNSON (1908-73) President. TLS, as President, 1p, Mar 17, 1965, small 4to, White House House letterhead, to Congressman Michael Kirwan, nice content re the famous speech made by Johnson two days earlier, before Congress, on the need to assure negroes the right to vote. A long speech, remembered for portions like "...I speak tonight for the dignity of man and the destiny of democracy...At times history and fate meet...So it was at Lexington and Concord...So it was last week in Selma, Alabama. There, long-suffering men and women peacefully protested the denial of their rights as Americans. Many were brutally assaulted...men and women are kept from voting simply because they are Negroes...I will send to Congress a law designed to elimate illegal barriers to the right to vote...And we shall overcome..." This speech led to the passing of "The Voting Rights Act of 1965." Letter reads, "...Your telegram was a bright and happy event in my day. Of course I am glad that you heartily approved of what I had to say. There really can be no argument about the position that I have taken for there are few issues before the people of this country that are so rooted in rightness - constitutionally, morally, and humanly..."
