Rare war-date A.L.S. 2pp. 8vo., New York, Sep. 12, 1861 to fellow Mason Hiram Cranston. Just days before his departure from New York to head the defenses of New Orleans, Lovell makes plans for the care of his family. In part: "…Please take good care of them in my absence and extend them every facility…in their preparations to join me…Leaving those who are nearest to me underyour charge for a short time…" Blank bottom margin of last page removed,. one chip at lower-left clear of text, overall very good.
