American Impressionist painter Mary Cassatt (1844-1926) was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania but spent much of her life living, working, and studying in Paris, France. After residing in France and Germany from 1851-1855, the Cassatt family relocated to Philadelphia. In 1874, Mary permanently settled in Paris but her family in Philadelphia continued to visit her abroad. It is likely that this trunk belonged to one of the artist's relatives and was used on some of those visits. An additional note, the American Line was in service from 1871-1902.
