LOT OF TWO OPTICAL ILLUSION TOYS.
Interesting Victorian era toys that utilized a series of still images that when viewed in succession through the device would give the illusion of movement. The earlier Milton Bradley Zoetrope (label on bottom of drum) utilized a spinning cardboard drum on a wooden base in which the viewer would look through narrow slits cut around the perimeter. The successor to this concept, known as the Praxinoscope was an improvement, replacing the slits with a circle of mirrors, giving a less distorted view of the action. This example consists of a tin drum on a wooden base. The Zoetrope includes 15 two-sided strips while the Praxinoscope includes 9 single sided strips for a variety of amusing shows. SIZE: 11-1/2" dia and 8-1/2" dia, respectively. PROVENANCE: The Diane and late Steve Olin collection. CONDITION: Both are very good with various chips and scratches. The strips are generally very good showing some edge wear. 1-13271-47
