J. KRAISSL, FLIGHT SURGEON, USAF 23RD FIGHTER GROUP, "FLYING TIGERS". Lot of assorted documents from Major Cornelius J. Kraissl, whom served as a flight surgeon with the USAF 23rd Fighter Group (named the "Flying Tigers") during WWII. The 23rd Fighter Group was comprised of volunteers and activated in China in July of 1942. The 23rd were responsible for air defense and conducted counter-air campaigns to deplete Japan's air strength, while additionally attacking Japanese forces, installations, transports, and escorting Allied bombers. Additional research indicates that Kraissl received a bronze star while serving with the Flying Tigers during WWII, served again during the Korean War with the New York Air National Guard, and retired with the rank of Brigadier General. Selected highlights include a "SUPPLY FORMS" folder containing original 1945 dated shipping tickets listing Kraissel as the "CONSIGNOR", an Aviation Hall of Fame of New Jersey PROPWASH Annual Special Edition booklet featuring a photo of Kraissel on the cover, several Aviation related magazines, letters addressed to Kraissel regarding invitations to conferences/events, scans of slides of assorted medical aircraft from assorted periods and nationalities, 2 period booklets (appear handmade) of assorted technical manuals, a large Thunderbirds decal, a vintage signed photograph of several Thunderbirds pilots, a North Hackensack Sheriff's recruitment letter indicating to contact Kraissel for recruitment, a Bergen County, NJ Sheriff's Department badge, as well as an unmarked wood and steel chest. CONDITION: paperwork shows varying degrees of age related discoloration, with some documents exhibiting some tearing and losses. Trunk exhibits oxidation on steel parts, with various chips and losses to wood parts. (02-24526-5/MLW). NON-GUN. $200-300.
