This lot of canes shares only the use of malacca shafts in common. Four have L-shaped handles, 4 have crookhandles and 1 has a sterling knob. Three of the L-handled canes have ivory handles and all have inscriptions on thebands. One silver band is inscribed "Chas. Man___", a gold-plated band is monogrammed "G.B.H.", and the 3rd isinscribed "Isaac Oakford." The 4th L-handle is maple. Three of the 4 crook handles are steamed single pieces ofmalacca, while the 4th has a broken hardwood handle. The 3 all-malacca canes have silver bands about 1/4 of theway down the shaft, one has an Arts & Crafts Movement cutwork band. One of the 3 malacca canes is molded to besquare in cross-section, with rounding on both ends. The last cane has a textured knob that is marked "P (or R) E S& Co." as well as "Sterling," and has a dark-stained shaft.(EST 500-700)
