LOT OF 2, DIFFERENT VIEWS OF CAPT. WM. WHEELER, 13TH NY BATTERY (KIA). The earlier published view without bm is signed "Lieut. Wm. Wheeler 1861" with a later pencil notation, "ami of Grandpa Mickle." The later view of Wheeler by "Whitney & Paradise, NY., late of Brady's New York & Washington Galleries" contains a somber dedication to a fallen comrade on verso. Wrote Mickle in pencil: "Late Capt. Wm. Wheeler, 13th NY Battery. Killed June 22nd 1864 near Kennesaw Mountain, Ga. Beloved by all who knew him-as noble as he was brave." Lt. Wheeler commanded the 13th NY. Battery attached to Von Steinwehr's division at Gettysburg and was hotly engaged, twice nearly overrun, on July 1st and 3rd, as his detailed report in the OR's will attest. Major Osborn (see earlier lot in catalog) was his CO. Wheeler was killed by musketry at Kolb's Farm, Georgia while sighting battery fire on rebel infantry. Wheeler's 1861 view is trimmed top and bottom with a horizontal bend in the middle. His later view in near MINT. Provenance: Mickle album.
