America sheds a tear for Will Rogers, the nationally-cherished "cowboy philosopher” and humanitarian, following his 1935 death in an airplane crash at Point Barrow, Alaska. In an attempt to perpetuate his memory, the Will Rogers Memorial Fund was created. Founded the year after Rogers’ death, this charitable organization –originally formed to provide care for members of the entertainment industry suffering from tuberculosis–supports pulmonary research to benefit the public at large.
