In the early 1990s Lorna Simpson began experimenting with imagery that did not include the body, yet still commented on gender and race. The present diptych is an excellent example of this development, presenting the viewer with a puzzling juxtaposition. Shoes became a major prop in Simpson's work at this time, commenting on how dress can define gender. Impractical high-heels, which were invented to accentuate a woman's lengthened calf, are positioned next to piano pedals, which require foot dexterity and represent the musical world in which women have been historically underrepresented.
