LONG, HUEY P.
(1893 - 1935) Governor of Louisiana, ""The Kingfish"" was noted for his demagoguery and political machinations. Assassinated while a U.S. Senator. Important T.L.S. 1p. 4to., on U.S. Senate letterhead, New Orleans, Aug. 16, 1932 to Robert Jackson of the Democratic National Campaign Committee concerning why he cannot speak on behalf presidential candidate Franklin D. Roosevelt! In part: ""...It rather appears to me from what I have been reading, as to the reliability of which I am not in position to judge, that the campaign is being given a trend on lines that would be consistent with my attitude and stand in this country. In order to be a real good, loyal Democrat and aid the party all that I can, as such is the condition, it would be better that I be forgotten as a campaign speaker for the party. I am so sincerely set for the proposition that the rich and powerful must be scaled from their privilege and control over the finances of the country and our resources that along any other line I would be worthless..."". Long adds in his own hand ""C.C. Franklin D Roosevelt Albany, N.Y."" at the bottom left. Together with a typed draft response from Jackson dated Aug. 24, 1932 which reads in part: ""...I...regret to learn that you feel you should be 'forgotten as a campaign speaker for the party'. In the first place...the 'campaign is being given a trend on lines that are not consistent with my attitude' are wholly erroneous. You must appreciate the fact that our position on political matters is being consistently misrepresented by a hostile Republican press...I can personally say to you that you and Governor Roosevelt have the same objective in MIND. It is possible you will not always both agree upon the same methods for achieving that end but as Disraeli or somebody else said, 'politics is the science of the second best'. In other words, it is a series of compromises and by the word compromise I do not mean 'surrender.' You have the fastest mind in the Democratic Party and I want to see that mentality used for the benefit of our campaign. I am going to write you again on this matter or telephone you later on..."". A few minor wrinkles, usual folds, otherwise very good condition.
