Lloyd died, in dire financial circumstances, shortly after the play's first performance. This play, one of the best tragedies of the 18C, by the Irishman Robert Jephson, is an adaptation of Horace Walpole’s novel The Castle of Otranto (1765) by his friend, who dedicates the play to him ‘with the greatest respect and gratitude’. At this time Jephson had found a refuge from his creditors with the post of Master of the Horse to Lord Townshend, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, so the dedication is dated from Dublin Castle : it is possible that he oversaw this edition.(2) LEE ( Nathaniel ).
