LLOYD GOFF, Early Texas oil/linen, 1928
LLOYD GOFF (1908-1982)
Untitled Paris Barges, 1928
Oil on linen
9 3/4in. x 12in.
Signed and dated lower left

One can only imagine the sense of wonder and excitement twenty-year-old Lloyd Goff, aspiring artist from Dallas, Texas, was feeling when he painted this picture. Barely out of his teens and from a small city yet to come into its own, he was in the most cosmopolitan city in the world wandering the neighborhoods and back streets of Paris.

In this scene, Goff paints the canals of Paris during an ordinary work day. Pedestrians and a car pass overhead on the bridge, while smoke from one of the barges drifts upward, and bright sunlight filters in under the bridge.

This canvas retains a freshness and state of preservation not normally seen in paintings near eighty years old. This is due to having been stacked unstretched beneath other works, and thus protected from the effects of oxidation, vibration, and light.

Provenance:
Estate of Lloyd Goff

Condition Report: Excellent condition.
