Ink on paper, hanging scroll, featuring Chinese calligraphy in semi-cursive script, signed and attr. Liu Yong (Chinese, 1719-1805), inscribed with 2 artist seals, 108 x 49 cm. Liu Yong was a Chinese politician and influential calligrapher during the Qing dynasty. His calligraphy style was marked by the use of thick brushes which produced bulging dots and lines. Born in 1719 in Zhucheng, China, Liu was later appointed the minister of ritual propriety and minister of war by Emperor Qianlong. In this position, the artist developed a reputation as a knowledgeable scholar and an articulate politician. He died in 1805 in Beijing, China. Today, a pair of Liu’s works are held in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.. PROVENANCE: Property of a gentleman (East Toronto, Canada)
