Arguably one of the most famous portraits of her career, this image represents the honest style of Lisette Model’s photography. Chosen from her PROMENADE DES ANGLAIS series, this photograph appeared on the cover of PM in January 1941, under the headline, “Why France Fell,” prompting criticism from all directions, during an unstable political time. It was not Model’s intention to have these images published, but when Ralph Steiner, the picture editor at the newspaper, reviewed them as part of an application for laboratory technician, he recognized their potential and submitted them for publication. Model’s career began at this point and a year later she participated in her first group show at The Museum of Modern Art.
