(LINCOLN BROADSIDE: PEOPLE HAVE THE RIGHT TO REBEL)
A great war-date anti-Lincoln election broadside 1p. folio, circa 1864 entitled: "Extract from a speech of Abraham Lincoln, when a member of Congress. 'Any people anywhere, being inclined, and having power, have the RIGHT to rise up and shake off the existing government, and form a new one that suits them better. This is a most valuable, a most sacred right -- a right which we hope and believe is to liberate the world. Nor is the right confined to cases in which the whole people of an existing government may choose to exercise it. ANY PORTION of such people that Can, May revolutionize and make their OWN of so much of the territory as the inhabit.' -- Speech of Abraham Lincoln, on the resolution referring the President's Message to various committees, Jan. 12, 1848. Appendix to Congressional Globe, page 94, 30th Congress". An intriguing document in which true context highlighted Lincoln's position on the Mexican people's right to rebel, but was used against him, by his opponents, during the Civil War. Center fold weak at the margins reinforced with archival tape on verso, light toning at margins, overall very good.
