LINCOLN ASSASSINATION CONSPIRATOR A.L.S.
<b>205. LINCOLN ASSASSINATION CONSPIRATOR BEVERLY TUCKER</b> Confederate agent and alleged Lincoln assassination conspirator. Following the murder of Lincoln, he was charged with conspiracy in the plot. Tucker fled to Mexico, returning to the United States in 1872. Fine association draft A.L.S. 2pp. 8vo., Berkeley Springs, WV, June 1, 1881 to President James A. Garfield. In part: "<i>...I would be very happy if you would give me the honor of your company to dinner at my house, at this place...remaining over a few days, enjoy the delightful bathing we have here. I will make you comfortable at my house, & I am sure it will refresh you...</i>". It is ironic that Tucker, an ex-Confederate agent and alleged Lincoln conspirator, would write to an ex-Union general and president who would himself be assassinated a month after receiving Tucker's letter!
