Hine's photographs of New York at the turn of the twentieth century capture the city as a blossoming cultural mecca, a place for opportunity. This image portrays the unknown destiny of a family who is clearly overwhelmed, but hopeful for the future. Their wide-eyed look may be due to the shock of adjusting to their new surroundings, or the magnesium flash powder that Hine ignited in a pan in order to supplement artificial with natural light. The Ellis Island photographs were taken between 1905-1909.
