LETTER SIGNED W.J. BRYAN.
LETTER SIGNED W.J. BRYAN. TLS "W.J. Bryan", April 9, 1902, Lincoln, NE. On "The Commoner" letterhead with original envelope addressed to "The Commoner." Great political content as Bryan writes, " No one can tell in advance what will be the action of the next national convention, but there is no reason to believe that the rank and file of the party will abandon the Kansas City platform. The daily papers are larely controlled by the great syndicates, and it is not safe to trust them on public questions...." Usual folds. Some toning of envelope. William Jennings Bryan (1860-1925) was the Democratic candidate for President in 1896, 1900 and 1908. He was defeated in the first 2 campaigns by William McKinley, and in the 3rd by William Howard Taft. Known as "The Great Populist" and hailed for his oratory skills, Bryan distinguished himself as a lawyer and statesman. He served under Woodrow Wilson as Secretary of State, but, being a pacifist, stepped down as War approached. It was his battle against the great Clarence Darrow in the Scopes "Monkey Trial" -- pitting creationist dogma against Darwinian/ evolutionary theory -- that is said to have caused his death. It is reported that the grueling battle taxed all of Bryan's strength, and the 100+ degree temperatures in the crowded courtroom did not ease Bryan's failing health.
