LETTER FROM ISRAEL PEMBERTON, 1764.
LETTER FROM ISRAEL PEMBERTON, 1764. A 1p. ALS by Israel Pemberton, Philadelphia, 1764, to John Ladd, Esq. Pemberton, a Quaker, was born in Philadelphia and early became wealthy, but always put philanthropy high in his priorities. He was involved in a number of social organizations, but his "pet" project was always the "Friendly Association for Regaining and Preserving Peace with the Indians by Pacific Measures," which had as one of its goals to keep the Delaware and Shawnee from joining the French in 1756. Pemberton also served in the Pennsylvania Assembly, resigning in 1756 in opposition to the Indian War. He also opposed the Revolution, for which he was imprisoned in 1777. He was moved to several prisons, but ultimately the experience damaged his health and caused his death in 1779. One biographer, Theo. Thayer, in 1943, subtitled his biography of Pemberton "King of the Quakers." But Pemberton lived by and ultimately died for his beliefs. This letter to a John Ladd thanks him for the kind care given to the Indians sent his way, and asks for continuing protection for them. The last sentence ends "...the preserving them from injury being the most favorable means we can use to prevent the shedding the blood of our fellow subjects." The postscript offers financial support if needed to help the Indians. Pemberton's approach worked -- partially. While there were deaths and captures by the Indians in Pennsylvania, none were Quakers. Letter has light toning, usual folds with separation along one. But overall in very good condition.
