(LESBIAN LOVERS?)
734. LESBIAN LOVERS? Intriguing A.L.S. 1p. legal folio, Williamsburg, [Va.?] [n.d., ca. 1750-1800] in which "Sally Becu [?]" writes to "Sally Tilestone of Savoy" in most part: "...Respected Lady when I contemplate the happy moments that we have spent together (although they were so to me) under your current bushes brings tears into my eyes. Last Sunday I rode home with your folks from meeting Betsy and I wend and eat some currents and & longed to have you there to eat some with us. it seem[s] to me the greatest happiness I could enjoy but when I look about me I see many objects which I think would happyly [sic] me if I could enjoy them instead then of running into the danger of temptation during the ardor of youth I will fly from the conflict in which my own passions are sure to fight against me and will probably betray me to the enemy. I see indeed thousands pursuing pleasure and professing to have found it in the haunts of debauchery but I see them but for a little while. Like the silly insect which flutters with delight around the [illeg] they soon receive some fatal injury in their minds their persons or fortunes and drop into irrecoverable ruin. Alas I am too much inclined to vice from the depravity of my nature and the violence of my passions I will not add fuel to the fire nor increase the violence of that natural tempest within me which of itself is sufficient to accomplish my destruction so I must conclude my pen is exceeding poor...please to write to me as quick as you can give my respects to Betty and Hannah I must go to milking...". After she signs her name, she adds four lines of verse: "Prudence says it would be much better / to have something about marriage in a letter / so to please her I think I will / ask if you are courted still". The integral address leaf (which bears no postal markings) is addressed to "Miss Sally Tilestone of Savoy". While we cannot be certain what is going on here between the two Sallys, we are fairly certain they are hiding their true identities. Combine that with the suggestiveness of the prose and draw your own conclusions. Heavy folds, a few marginal tears, ink notation at top right margin, otherwise very good.$75-100
