<b>1394. NATHAN LEOPOLD</b> (1904 - 1971) American criminal who, with Richard Loeb, was convicted in the thrill-killing of a 14 year old. Saved from the chair by Clarence Darrow's brilliant defense. Fine content T.L.S. on letterhead of The Castaner Social Service Fund, Puerto Rico, Mar. 10, 1971, to Sarah McCort, in part: <i>"...No, I am not retired. I am Research Associate in the Commonwealth Department of Social Services, and I also work part time as Administrative Assistant for Castaner Hospital. Some of the papers I have written on penology are published in the following places: Nebraska Law Review, Vol. 45, No. 1, pp. 33-57...On birds, I have published Checklist of the Birds of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, 1963...I do not wish to be quoted in your term paper, but I should appreciate it if you would make an extra copy and send it to me when you finish it...I hope you get an A...</i>". Leopold was a free man when he wrote this letter, as his original term of 99 years commuted to 85 by Gov. Adlai Stevenson for his contribution to malaria tests while a volunteer in prison. He obtained a masters degree at the University of Puerto Rico, where he also taught math and helped raise funds for a church. With the original transmittal cover, very good condition.<b> $150-200</b>
