(LEON CZOLGOSZ): (1873 - 1901) American assassin of President William McKinley. Czolgosz, an avowed anarchist, stalked McKinley at the Buffalo Pan-American Exposition on September 5, 1901. Following a speech by the President, Czolgosz made his way past McKinley's fifty bodyguards, drew a pistol and shot twice. McKinley was gravely wounded in the stomach, and died nine days later. Czolgosz's trial took but two weeks, and the assassin was electrocuted on October 29, 1901. An exceptionally rare document (unsigned), being the only court doocument extant concerning Czolgosz's arrest and execution for the assassination of President William Mckinley! The disbound document, 1p. folio, is a partly-printed Erie (New York) County Court docket sheet briefly setting forth essential court details concerning the cases against six defendants. At upper-right appear the brief entries concerning Czolgosz, in full: "Couty Court, Erie County The People AGAINST Leon F. Czolgosz alias Fred Nieman 1901. Assisination [sic] of President McKinley at Bflo N.Y. 'Pan American' Exposition Sept. 23 Order removing Indictment to Supreme Court for trial. Oct. 31 Certificate on Execution and Report of Post Mortem Nov. 22 Affidavit" Additional notes made in 1935 attest to the fact that all other court documents had been: "Del[ivered] to Buffalo Historical Society 4/16/35 S.J. Reitz per Order of Albany N.Y. also engrossed minutes". Again, this historic document is the only such item pertaining to Csolgosz' trial and execution to remain in the public domain! One light horizontal fold and a few tiny marginal chips affect nothing, else very good to fine.
