LITERATURE
Lee Friedlander, LEE FRIEDLANDER: PHOTOGRAPHS, NEW YORK, Haywire Press, 1978 (illustrated)
This portfolio samples Lee Friedlander's work up to the date of its issue. It contains examples of his various series, including the televisions, party pictures and self-portraits. The portfolio was issued when his work was gaining widespread notice. In 1972, Friedlander had one-man shows at the Museum of Modern Art and the Witkin Gallery in New York.
An important influence on Friedlander, and one of his earliest champions, Walker Evans wrote, "He seems to have been born with his style ... Friedlander is the extension of documentary. He is glacially conscious, and sure of his control. He is pure eye, and a consummate marksman. ... [his photographs are] 1960's craziness reflecting the cacophonous jar which is at all our nerve-ends: ubiquitous commercialism, generic eyesore, and galloping pathos." (Walker Evans, "Photography," in Louis Kronenberger, ed., QUALITY: ITS IMAGE IN THE ARTS, New York, Atheneum, 1969, p. 192).
