Stack’s. CATALOGUE OF THE COL. JAMES W. FLANAGAN COLLECTION OF GOLD COINS. New York, Mar. 23–25, 1944. 8vo, original brown quarter calf, gilt; green cloth sides. 119, (1) pages; 1681 lots; text illustrations; prices realized list tipped in. Inscribed “To the Smallest Biggest man we know (signed) Morton Stack, Jos. B. Stack.” Fine. The Special Leatherbound Edition. Adams A–: “Strong Latin American gold: Brasher counterstamp. Excellent U.S. gold: 1933 $20, 1815 $5, 1819 $5, 1798 small eagle $5. Shults $5. 1880 $4.” The description of the final lot, the excessively rare 1933 double eagle, confiscated by the United States Government before the sale, follows: “1933 Brilliant uncirculated. Perfect gem with the full mint bloom, the last year of issue. Although this is the first one that ever came up in any public auction and there is not a price set on this in the standard catalog we know that 8 or ten of the pieces were sold privately from $1,000.00 to $2200.00. This piece has cost the Col. the tidy sum of $2200.00 which has set a new high for this coin. He paid this price to one of our leading dealers in the south. Excessively rare and in great demand, no buy orders on this particular coin will be accepted.” A landmark sale. According to a printed note at the end of the prices realized list, “The grand total of $87,608.45, represents the largest amount ever realized at a coin auction sale.” Ex Stewart P. Witham, with his bookplate.
