Freeman Craig & Co. THE COLONIAL LATIN AMERICAN COIN COLLECTION OF RAY JOHNSON. FIFTH–EIGHTH MAIL BID AUCTIONS. Sausalito, 1981–83. Four parts, complete, bound in one volume. 8vo, original blue full morocco, decorated and lettered in gilt; original printed card covers bound in. 80, (4) + 107, (1) + 96 + 70 pages; 525 + 800 + 900 + 600 lots; illustrated throughout. Fine. The rare leatherbound combined special edition, the first copy we have offered since 1996. An exceptional collection of reales de ocho formed by Ray Johnson. According to the cataloguer, Johnson’s goal was to complete “a date collection of all crowns from the various Spanish colonial mints (Guatemala, Lima, Nuevo Reino, Popayan, Potosi, Santiago and Mexico). He completed three of these series and had a cumulative 95% of all confirmed issues... The series of catalogues presenting this marvelous group will doubtlessly become a significant reference volume in its own right. It is probable that no sales catalogue in numismatic history has ever included so nearly complete a collection of these Latin American colonial crowns.”
