A late example of this form, it is of a dark Jade material that was thickly-coated white (baked on?)....which coating then toned in the tomb and took on some brown rust from its burial environment. 3-9/16" from tip to tail, it has a protrusion from the mouth that is holed for suspension as an amulet. Fertility is the standard symbolic meaning for the fish in China, since it lays a large number of eggs. The Leaping Fish has the additional meaning of overcoming obstacles and striving to succeed. Jades of this fish form are often assumed to be late Neolithic, but that this example was coated and then took on the iron rust of the tomb is evidence that the use of the form persisted into the 1st millenium BC. Zhou Dynasty, riverine area, unknown province. Excellent condition, cleaned in a normal fashion, Choice.
