LEADBETTER, DANVILLE
(1811 - 1866) Confederate brigadier general who constructed the defenses at Mobile and Chattanooga. After the war he fled to Mexico and later Canada where he died. Extremely rare war-date E.S. "D. Leadbetter" with rank in another hand penned on the verso of an A.L.S. by one Capt. W. F. Foster of the Engineers in the Army of Tennessee, 4pp. small 8vo., Atlanta, Mar. 8, 1864 requesting private housing for himself and staff while reconnoitering the countryside around the Western & Atlanta Railroad. Leadbetter approves the request on verso. Verso also bears an eight-line A.E.S. by Gen. MARCUS J. WRIGHT (1831-1922) acknowledging the transfer. The text of Leadbetter endorsement is quite light, but signature is darker and about a 7/10. Wright's endorsement is bold and fine. Very good.
