LE HAY.- Recueil de cent estampes représentant différentes nations du Levant tirées sur les tableaux peint d'après nature en 1707 et 1708 par les ordres de M. de Ferriol, ambassadeur du Roi à la Porte. Et gravées en 1712 et 1713 par les soins de Mr. Le Hay. A Paris, chez Le Hay [...] et Duchange, graveur du Roi, 1714. In-f° : titre gravé, 100 planches gravées par Simonneau, Scotin, Du Bosc, Cochin, etc. (faibles piqûres marg.). Rel. de l'époque : plein veau, dos fleuronné doré à nerfs, étiq. de cuir rouge, tranches jaspées de rouge (cuir craquelé, coins émoussés,un coin émoussé, mors part. fendus, usures).
Premier tirage de ces 100 gravures numérotées, titrées, signées. Une 40aine figure le personnel gravitant autour de la Cour ottomane, du plus haut au plus bas fonctionnaire : grand vizir, effendi, sultan, militaires (janissaires, spahis, officiers de marine..), religieux (mufti, iman, derviche...) ainsi que pages, porte-épées, cuisiniers, jardiniers, etc. Une 20aine d'estampes figure les moeurs et la vie quotidienne des Turcs et Turques : odalisques, amants, scène de hammam, danseuses, divers vendeurs ambulants, l'ami des bêtes qui "porte au Berestein des foies de moutons pour nourrir les chats" (!). Le cosmopolitisme d'Istambul est figuré par les 40 dernières estampes : marchand français, Juifs, Grecs, Hongrois, Albanais, Roumains, Bulgares, Arméniens, Persan (et sa femme "Persienne"), Indiens, Africains, Maures... La dernière planche, sur double page, figure un mariage turc.
Le Français Charles de Ferriol commendita les gravures à Le Hay lors de son ambassade à la Grande Porte entre 1699 et 1709. Celles-ci furent réalisées d'après les dessins du peintre flamand J.B. van Moer (qui vécut à Constantinople pendant la 1re moitié du XVIIIe s.), eux-mêmes commandités par l'ambassaseur hollandais Cornelis Calkoen.
Sans le volume d'explications des planches paru en 1715 et illustré de 3 planches.

After full payment, buyers are kindly requested to take away their purchases immediately after the auction or at the bookshop the next Tuesday after the auction 230 av. Louise, from 2 pm until 6 pm.
Goods will be send only after customers’ payment.
Packing and dispatching are entirely at the buyer’s own expense.
Books whose price exceed 100 EUR will be send by registered post.

Payment will be made in Euro's. We do not accept credit cards neither cheques whose total amount exceed 200 EUR or cheques not validated for higher sum.
Terms of sale require buyers to pay immediately for their purchases, which means that lots will be released to them only when full and cleared payment as been received by us
In addition to the hammer price, the buyer has to pay a buyer’s premium of 21%, V.A.T. inclusive, all strictly in cash and in Euro's (EUR)
In case of original art and if the principles of the author’s rights are applicable, an extra 4% must be paid on each hammer price of at least 1250 EUR
All items are assumed to be in good condition unless otherwise stated. Buyers are kindly invited to carry out their own inspection of the lots they want to buy. All items to be auctioned are on view for several days prior to the sale.
Returning an item after the striking of the hammer will not be accepted, whatever the reason put forward. Those items bought on order must be inspected within 8 days after receipt. Any return after this term will be refused.
All items of the catalogue with the mention « n.c. » (non collationné = not inspected) are not subject to return. Neither are those sold in lots (two items or more) works consisting in multiple volumes and periodicals or series.
If you cannot attend the auction, we can execute written bids on your behalf. To ensure a satisfactory service, it is necessary to make arrangements for the services at least one day before the sale.
On every purchase Belgian law only is applicable, and all cases of dispute are exclusively to the competence of the Brussels Chamber.
