LAWN OR YARDELL JOCKEY STATUE ON PEDESTL
LAWN OR YARDELL JOCKEY STATUE ON PEDESTAL: Know commonly as a Lawn Jockey or Yardell, meaning a small man white or black, usually placed in a yard as an ornament, dressed in Jockey attire and holding a ring as to take the reins of a horse. This is an original lawn jockey from Virginia featuring exaggerated features, dating from early 1800's. The story goes that George Washington had the first one made to honor a young man in his service who stood his post at the crossing of the Delaware, holding his light and who sadly died while standing at his post, the result of the freezing cold. It is true that if you went to early Mt. Vernon years ago, a like statue greeted you. The lawn jockey stands on a pedestal both of which are cast iron, 47'' H, the base is 14'' H x 10'' W. NOTE: Due to years of exposure to the elements, the polychrome painting has been compromised, rust is prevalent through out and the bolts attaching the jockey to the statue have rusted away. The base plate is loose and overall condition is deemed fair.
