KENTISH GUARDS OF RHODE ISLAND. This group of uniforms appears to date from the 1880’s to just past the turn of the century. Most of the uniforms seem to have an association with the Kentish Guards, a well known Militia organization from East Greenwich, Rhode Island. The group includes 1 large double breasted blue overcoat with cape. The overcoat originally had 14 coat sized buttons, two of which remain. The cape had 7 coat sized buttons, 5 of which remain. The overcoat has an unfinished hem and is lined in dark blue wool. / 1 Sergeants frock coat with white shoulder tabs, white & dark blue sergeant stripes, white cuff trim, and white piping. The 9 button coat has all of its buttons intact. The cuff buttons and shoulder tab buttons are Maine state seals. There are also 4 Maine state seal coat buttons on the tails. The coat is lined with white polished cotton and is quilted. / 1 Private’s frock coat with white shoulder tabs, white cuff trim, and white piping. The 9 button coat has all of its buttons intact. The coat is lined with white polished cotton and is quilted. / 1 Officer’s tail coat with white & gold bullion collar trim. There are 5 rows of bullion adorning the sleeves, and bullion Kentish Guard crossed rifles below. The shoulders have braided knots with US 1902 buttons at the top. There are 9 Kentish Guard buttons down the front and 6 on the tail. The interior is lined with white cotton and there is a tag at the collar that reads “GEO. F. HARDING BOSTON.”. / 1 Officer’s frock coat with white & gold bullion collar trim. There is one row of bullion adorning the sleeves, and bullion Kentish Guard crossed rifles below. The shoulders have braided knots with post WWI US buttons at the top. There are 9 Kentish Guard buttons down the front and 6 on the tail. The interior is lined with white cotton. There are 5 Kentish Guard medals pinned to the left side of the chest. / 2 Pair of blue wool pants with 1” white wool stripes down the outside of each leg. Pants are button fly with a sizing strap in the back. / 2 Pair of plain blue wool pants with 5 button fly fronts. / 1 Pair of modern suspenders likely used for display purposes. CONDITION: uniforms show wear and use but remain in generally solid condition. There is minor scattered moth damage. Many buttons appear to be resewn or replaced. Pants show heavy use and moderate soiling but also remain solid. (02-18135-1/BF). $500-800.
